Summary

"It's a good time to be a woman: we have the vote and the Pill, and we haven't been burnt as witches since 1727。 However, a few nagging questions do remain。。。

Why are we supposed to get Brazilians? Should we use Botox? Do men secretly hate us? And why does everyone ask you when you're going to have a baby?"

Part memoir, part rant, Caitlin answers the questions that every modern woman is asking。

As a reader of quote dense non-fiction, it was a nice breath of fresh air to have a more narrative bolstering of my feminist identity。 Granted, it lacked facts and evidence for the proclamations made and to me screamed “white femininism” in the priorities about naming body parts and choosing clothes rather than a focus on genuine social justice。 However, there were great chapters and conversations and explorations written in a HILARIOUS WAY, like I snorted when I laughed loudly on the train and As a reader of quote dense non-fiction, it was a nice breath of fresh air to have a more narrative bolstering of my feminist identity。 Granted, it lacked facts and evidence for the proclamations made and to me screamed “white femininism” in the priorities about naming body parts and choosing clothes rather than a focus on genuine social justice。 However, there were great chapters and conversations and explorations written in a HILARIOUS WAY, like I snorted when I laughed loudly on the train and went bright red。 Especially the chapter on abortion or body image, those topics and her writing do well at solving personal qualms created by the patriarchy, rather than looking at a national scale or the more political side of feminism。Overall, a funny and interesting book。 I wouldn’t call it essential feminism literature, but on a personal level, this could help confirm your feminist identity, explore interesting points。 As an overall non-fiction book, I do prefer far-reaching and social justice focus topics, looking at systemic attitudes more deeply and critically- but that’s a personal preference! 。。。more

The author takes some liberties in logic and there are a couple of “he did not just go there” moments, but his writing style overcomes any of that kind of criticism

What a disappointment。 I understand that this book was published 10 years ago and when it comes to feminist discourse a decade equals a million years, but many of this book’s faults weren’t really explained by how old it is。The casual racism, the fatphobia, homophobia, transphobia, lack of self awareness, contradictory ideas and the overall shaming towards “other women” were just too much。

It's a contradictory book itself。 A personal opinion about feminism with ZERO academic basis。I think is even dangerous for a young person。 It's a contradictory book itself。 A personal opinion about feminism with ZERO academic basis。I think is even dangerous for a young person。 。。。more

I'm working to abandon more books that I'm not that into。 This was one of those。 I am still marking them。 They will still "count" towards the year end counts。 Oh well。 This one just didn't interest me at this time。 I'm working to abandon more books that I'm not that into。 This was one of those。 I am still marking them。 They will still "count" towards the year end counts。 Oh well。 This one just didn't interest me at this time。 。。。more

I read 'How to Build a Girl' and did not enjoy it, but this book was available on Borrowbox as an audio version, so I decided to listen to it and it made me laugh out loud several times。 If I had physically read it, I don't think I would have enjoyed it but listening to it, while I was doing housework, cleaning and cooking, made these 'chores' more fun。 I may not agree with some of Moran's views, but I could totally relate to many of the personal stories she told, especially giving birth and bei I read 'How to Build a Girl' and did not enjoy it, but this book was available on Borrowbox as an audio version, so I decided to listen to it and it made me laugh out loud several times。 If I had physically read it, I don't think I would have enjoyed it but listening to it, while I was doing housework, cleaning and cooking, made these 'chores' more fun。 I may not agree with some of Moran's views, but I could totally relate to many of the personal stories she told, especially giving birth and being a mother。 She says it as it is and I admire her honesty。 。。。more

Oh I’m so torn。 Some parts were really great, profound and laugh out loud moments。 But other parts really just didn’t sit right with me。 I can’t align what I feel is feminism with the dragging through the dirt of some of the women in this book。 For me, there felt to be a lot of attack that stopped with the women themselves, rather than an uglier underlying cause。 I hate to write anything negative but just didn’t enjoy how different ‘types’ of women were compared for the choices they made over wh Oh I’m so torn。 Some parts were really great, profound and laugh out loud moments。 But other parts really just didn’t sit right with me。 I can’t align what I feel is feminism with the dragging through the dirt of some of the women in this book。 For me, there felt to be a lot of attack that stopped with the women themselves, rather than an uglier underlying cause。 I hate to write anything negative but just didn’t enjoy how different ‘types’ of women were compared for the choices they made over what to do with their bodies。 The dragging of Katie Price but near obsessing of Lady Gaga, no to stripping but yes to pole dancing。 Where and how and why does anyone have the right to decide what a woman should or shouldn’t do。 Gah, so many thoughts!!! 。。。more

After watching ' Raised by Wolves ' I was keen to read this, but sadly I didn't like it at all。 I tried my best to endure it but I just couldn't。 Too many books and not enough time to waste it on the wrong ones。 After watching ' Raised by Wolves ' I was keen to read this, but sadly I didn't like it at all。 I tried my best to endure it but I just couldn't。 Too many books and not enough time to waste it on the wrong ones。 。。。more

I wasn’t sure at all that I’d enjoy this book。 As soon as I started though, I realised that there isn’t actually a target audience here。 I’m middle-aged and still managed to get so much out of it。 Apart from the humour, which I absolutely love, there is so much about the female experience here that rings true with me and a lot of it is ageless。 I can see from a few previous reviews that it’s clearly quite a polarising book, I get that。 Some of it is quite confronting and the writing style won’t I wasn’t sure at all that I’d enjoy this book。 As soon as I started though, I realised that there isn’t actually a target audience here。 I’m middle-aged and still managed to get so much out of it。 Apart from the humour, which I absolutely love, there is so much about the female experience here that rings true with me and a lot of it is ageless。 I can see from a few previous reviews that it’s clearly quite a polarising book, I get that。 Some of it is quite confronting and the writing style won’t suit every reader。 However, just because a lot of it is basic common sense, it doesn’t mean that most women have put all this together in relation to their own experience。 Far from it! I had a number of “Oh yes!” moments。 For me, a thought-provoking and hilarious read。 。。。more

Parts of this book were very funny。 A lot of the content was not - - and something about a white woman from England casually dropping the “N-word” led me to the 1 star rating。 (was especially jarring because I listened to this on audible。 She saw just as little wrong with saying the word, as she did writing it)。 No thank you。

After reading @roxanegay74’s Bad Feminist, I thought it would be interesting to have a go at this for comparison。I wanted to enjoy this book。。。 but I found it more meh-moir than manifesto, more funnies than fact, more opinions than substance。Forgive me, but I also couldn’t concentrate on the narrative as sometimes she goes off-tangent。 But for a book attempting to answer “what every woman is asking”, this failed for me。 I feel that there’s a wee bit of white feminism here too。 And a bit of privi After reading @roxanegay74’s Bad Feminist, I thought it would be interesting to have a go at this for comparison。I wanted to enjoy this book。。。 but I found it more meh-moir than manifesto, more funnies than fact, more opinions than substance。Forgive me, but I also couldn’t concentrate on the narrative as sometimes she goes off-tangent。 But for a book attempting to answer “what every woman is asking”, this failed for me。 I feel that there’s a wee bit of white feminism here too。 And a bit of privilege。Fair enough it was written in 2011 so maybe it has ages a bit。。。 but still。 Really had a hard time finishing this one。 One for the @littlefreelibrary across the road。 Hopefully someone else likes it more than I did。 。。。more

Började bra men tappade fart, hon kommer av sig i vissa argumentationer och hamnar på villovägar ex att det är fel att gå på stripklubbar men okej att gå och se burlesque shower。。

Caitlin Moran definitely has some interesting and reasonable thoughts about feminism, presented (mostly) in a enjoyable and comicial manner。 Moreover she describes experiences ungraspable and unimaginable for men。 However she also has some weird thoughts on men (which maybe is supposed to make it relatable to another audience, but for me only brings it down) and a lot of references to life in the UK which is unrelatable for me。

Really enjoyed this one, particularly the chapters on fashion & feminism。

Very enjoyable read。 Most of the time I found myself going 'yep, that's how it be sometimes 😅'。 Didn't agree with everything she had to say about feminism, but that's why we read, no? A hilarious and witty read。 Possibly one of the best descriptions of motherhood and abortion that I’ve ever read。 A strong recommendation。 There is this recommendation by Grazia on the cover that every woman should read it。 I would rather say every non-shovinist would probably thoroughly enjoy!

I loved it and I would have loved it even more if didn't have the 'memoir' parts。 I didn't find them in the least bit interesting; I didn't care about Caitlin Moran's wedding or about every pair of shoes she had bought and never worn and now described them in freaking details。But I absolutely loved her take on feminism, on women's rights, life choices, world view etc etc etc。 I found it funny, smart and very uplifting and inspiring。 I loved it and I would have loved it even more if didn't have the 'memoir' parts。 I didn't find them in the least bit interesting; I didn't care about Caitlin Moran's wedding or about every pair of shoes she had bought and never worn and now described them in freaking details。But I absolutely loved her take on feminism, on women's rights, life choices, world view etc etc etc。 I found it funny, smart and very uplifting and inspiring。 。。。more
